Everything Has a Story Behind

It all started back in summer 1994 in Palm Desert, CA: My father bought a 1985 VW GTI to my mother as a commuter car. After driving such ugly, boring, slow Datsun and Chevette cars, a GTI looked like a big change. The car was so interesting at first glance because it had a Motor Trend 1985 Car of the Year sticker in the rear window. It dialed 120 MPH in the speedometer. With a Red Mars paint color and black trims it looked like a little sprinter. Very sporty. It was acquired in a car auction with a failure in the radiator fan for $800 USD. Everything else worked. It had AC, no Power Steering, manual windows, sunroof, rear window wiper, and a high compression 1800cc 8 valve engine with Fuel Injection… Pretty spartan car. So sad there are no pictures of the car at that time. Maybe my brother has one of it, but it must be more years after, when the car was recovered from a theft and after a couple crash incidents it was involved. But the car was beautiful. It had all the sport compact car spirit in it. The first time I saw it, it caught my eye. Nothing comparable to other cars around. All I can say is that after this first GTI almost every car we have had parked in my house since then has been a water-cooled VW. Why? Because of their undoubtful reliability and style. All the cars I have owned so far are VW brand. I bet those who are VW fans have owned at least three of them. I have owned five so far.

The Waterpumpers name has its origin in a trip I did to my relatives in Los Angeles, CA back in 2011. One of my uncles owns a pretty clean vintage 1968 VW Bug with racks. I told him I've owned a VW but water-cooled so he was surprised. He said water-cooled VWs are used to be refered as “water pumpers”, as you would notice, due to the fact they have a water pump for the cooling system. The Website would eventually be named after that nickname into a single word: Waterpumpers.

The Waterpumpers blog is something just for fun. Because we love water-cooled VWs and european cars we want to see them still alive, specially if we are talking about older ones… The squares.
